In today’s competitive culture we are taught to never give up and never give in—so we don’t hear much about surrendering.  If winning is everything, surrendering is unthinkable. We would rather talk about winning, succeeding, overcoming, and conquering than yielding, submitting, obeying, and surrendering. But surrendering to God is the heart of worship.

As Joshua approached the biggest battle of his life, he encountered God, fell in worship before him, and surrendered his plans. That surrender led to a stunning victory at Jericho.  This is the paradox: Victory comes through surrender.

Nothing is more powerful than a surrendered life in the hands of God. “So give yourselves completely to God.”

The ugly barbarian was like a broken record, every day the same.
Aggression oozing, fueled by the Philistine army with clenched fists held high to the sky, they screamed their loyalty as Goliath thundered onto the killing field. Confidence, arrogance, big mouth…he had it all. Sure, he had everyone’s attention, because #1 he was a giant (9 ft. 9 in.): “…Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.” I Samuel 17:4, and #2 his vile words, spewed out against the God of Israel, pierced the air, paralyzing King Saul, Abner, captain of the host, even Eliab, Abinadab, and Shammah, the older brothers of David, the teen-aged shepherd boy.

With armor too big to wear, the brothers unsupportive with ridicule, David remained focused. There was no Band of Brothers for David. His heart, mind, and body knew what had to be done against this fighting machine. There would be no Art of War needed here. Once again in Israel’s history, the battle was the Lord’s “…for the battle is the Lord’s and he will give you into our hands”. I Samuel 17:47.

Against the battle between good and evil, we like a good ending and this fight delivered (I Samuel 17:28-51).

Every warrior watching saw the Hand of the Living God rescue His people. They ran, but what they witnessed they did not, could not flee from mentally. Penetration in their memory was intentional for God’s Power to be never forgotten. Reaching home, the words describing the killing tumbled out, with the retelling making it the more vivid and permanent. No one in the homes, no one in the towns, no one was left out to hear about young David, and His God.

The nephews heard about Uncle David, and heard about what he did. They knew He was the real champion, and they grew to become examples of the man after God’s Own Heart, “…I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart…”. Acts 13:22
What a legacy of devotion to God, leadership, and influence from the young shepherd boy! “And yet again there was war at Gath, where was a man of great stature…and he also was the son of the giant. But when he defied Israel, Jonathan, the son of Shimea, David’s brother, slew him. These were born unto the giant in Gath; and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.” I Chronicles 20:6-8

Just like in David’s family, the younger generations hear, see, and imitate us. Nothing is unnoticed, or forgotten. We are responsible to remind, share and keep fresh and current the absolute truth, “For I am the Lord, I change not…”. Malachi 3:6

The ‘story’ of your life is told every day, especially to those you love. We must purpose to be examples of prayer and Bible reading, honesty, faithfulness to God and family. God hates religion, He loves relationship. Choose to have a real relationship and obvious experience with God, “…the Captain of your salvation…”. Hebrews 2:10
